Remote exploitation of a command injection vulnerability in the authentication component of Oracle Corp.'s Secure Backup Administration Server could allow an unauthenticated attacker to bypass authentication or to execute arbitrary commands in the context of the running server.
This vulnerability exists in the authenticate() function of php/common.php. This function is called from the login.php script that authenticates a user attempting to use the service. The script fails to sanitize the input from the Web form when verifying that the user has permission to use the service. Since the user name is used as part of a command run in a shell by the Web interface, if an attacker inserts a shell command separator meta-character followed by a command to execute and another command separator, the command is executed.
This is similar as vulnerability in CVE-2008-4006, but the patch did not correctly filter all shell meta characters and still allows some shell meta characters to be injected.
Exploitation allows an attacker to bypass authentication or execute arbitrary shell commands in the context of the web server process. Due to the limited shell meta characters which can be injected, the command injection capability is limited. The authentication bypass scenario is more likely. By combining with other post authentication command injection vulnerabilities iDefense reported, system compromise still can be achieved.
Oracle Corp.'s Secure Backup version 10.2.0.3 for Linux and Secure Backup version 10.2.0.3 for Windows have been confirmed vulnerable. Secure Backup version 10.3 is not affected. Other versions and other platforms may also be affected.
Block access to the httpd interface of vulnerable servers.
