DESCRIPTION

Local exploitation of a memory corruption vulnerability in Microsoft Corp.'s Windows win32k.sys kernel module driver could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with kernel-level privileges.

A memory corruption vulnerability exists within the win32k.sys kernel module. Specifically, the system call NtUserPaintMenuBar does not properly sanitize function arguments passed to it. This leads to an attacker being able to write an arbitrary four bytes of data to an arbitrary memory address.

ANALYSIS

Exploitation of this issue results in the elevation of privileges for an attacker with local access to a vulnerable machine. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would need to construct a custom executable file, which calls the NtUserPaintMenuBar system call with specially crafted arguments. Upon executing the custom binary file, the attacker would be able to gain kernel-level privileges on the vulnerable machine.

iDefense is unaware of any effective workarounds for this vulnerability.
