Adobe Reader X TrueType Font 'cmap' Table Integer Overflow Vulnerability

DESCRIPTION

Remote exploitation of an integer overflow vulnerability in Adobe Systems Inc.'s Adobe Reader versions 10.1.4 and earlier could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the current user.

The vulnerability occurs during the processing of a malformed true type font 'cmap' table. When processing a specific element of the 'cmap' table data structure an integer overflow can occur resulting in a buffer, located on the heap, being improperly indexed and written to. The improper indexing of the heap buffer can result in the execution of arbitrary code.

ANALYSIS

Exploitation of this vulnerability results in the execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the user viewing a malformed PDF document using a vulnerable version of Adobe Reader. Since PDF documents can be embedded in a Web page and parsed by default, this vulnerability can be exploited as a typical Web browser vulnerability. To exploit this vulnerability an attacker would need to craft a PDF document containing an embedded true type font file which triggers the integer overflow. Once a user has been tricked into opening the malicious PDF document in a Web browser or directly in Adobe Reader, no further user interaction is required.

  • Adobe Acrobat XI (11.0.0) for Windows and Macintosh
  • Adobe Acrobat X (10.1.4) and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh
  • Adobe Acrobat 9.5.2 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh

WORKAROUND

iDefense is unaware of any effective workarounds for this vulnerability.
